On Sunday August 19, 1792, in Moncoutant, the county town of Deux-Sèvres, several hundred rural youths refused to accept the draw for "volunteers" to be sent to the frontiers. They disarmed the few gendarmes present and ransacked the house of the administrator Puichaud.
Thus began a revolt that was to set the entire Bressui region ablaze for 6 days. But more than a simple insurrection, this little-known event marked the first moments of the terrible Vendée civil war...
