Conférence UTLMO : Quand le cartographe de Louis XIV dessinait le littoral atlantique
Dates & opening times
Descriptif
Between 1688 and 1724, one man surveyed the Atlantic coastline relentlessly, particularly between Oléron, Rochefort, Charente and Saintonge. Claude Masse, the king's engineer, was tasked with drawing up the most accurate maps to organize defense against enemy landings. A man of science, he took the opportunity to map the hinterland, tracing the course of the Charente, Seudre and Boutonne rivers. And he became an early expert on an environment whose uniqueness and fragility he saw as very close to our current challenges.
But as someone who has made a personal connection with the region, and who often sleeps in the homes of its inhabitants, he is also passionate about them, their lives, their customs and the history of their communities. All in all, these sumptuous, scattered maps and unpublished memoirs offer a striking description of the banks of the Charente and Saintonge at the end of Louis XIV's reign.
