Victor Hugo's famous title, published in 1866, echoes the greatness and misery of those who are racing the seas at the same time, aboard these canvas cathedrals, ships with oversized sails, to bring back goods from the ends of the earth. They will have to go beyond the great capes, to Peru or Chile, to Australia, China or New Caledonia. Cape Horn is often on their route...

But what do we know about them? What price will they have paid to satisfy the growing needs of fast-expanding modern Europe?

The shipwreck of the Port Caledonia on Antioch, returning from these distant lands, speaks to us about them...
