Description
Waders are birds that live and feed on mudflats. They comprise around 210 species in 14 families. They include jacanas, oystercatchers, stilts, avocets, oedipers, willets, lapwings, plovers, woodcocks, snipes, godwits, curlews, sandpipers, turnstones and sandpipers.
In Europe, some 25 species are regular or occasional visitors to intertidal mudflats. The smallest species is the least sandpiper (Colidris minuta), which weighs 15 grams and has a wingspan of 34 cm. The largest species is the curlew (Numenius arquata), which weighs up to 1.3 kg with a maximum wingspan of 1 meter.
Shorebirds make long migrations between boreal or arctic nesting areas and temperate or tropical wintering grounds.
The Strait of Charente is France's foremost reception area for shorebirds, making it an area of prime importance for the conservation of these species.
This exhibition, produced with the support of the University of La Rochelle and other partners in the limitrack program, aims to demonstrate to a wide audience the essential role played by the Charentais Pertuis in the life cycle of certain species of shorebirds, and the value of research actions aimed at gaining a better understanding of the interactions between birds and their environment, in partnership with the local structures concerned.
