UTLMO conference: The history of pants
Dates & opening times
Description
The history of pants is a political one. A symbol of virility and power, pants were banned for women, and their difficult conquest tells the story of the profound changes in women's lives in France. In images, we'll look at the constraint to dress like a woman imposed by the police ordinance of 1800, the resistance to the ban, and recent developments that have made pants a mixed garment, unlike the skirt.
Christine Bard works on the political, social and cultural history of women and gender, and has published numerous individual and collective works in this field. She chairs the Archives du féminisme association and directs the collection of the same name at Presses universitaires de Rennes. She runs the MUSEA - virtual museum on the history of women and gender - and co-chairs the AFEMUSE - association for the prefiguration of the museum of feminisms.
