Carrelets de pêche
Dates & opening times
Descriptif
Two fishing carrelets, fully restored by the commune of Château d'Oléron in 2019, are located on the coastal footpath between the port of Château d'Oléron and the Pont d'Oléron.
One of the department's jewels, the carrelets are a type of square-meshed net, mounted on two hoops and suspended from a winch, which is operated from a pontoon.
These pontoons extend right up to the low-water mark, so fishing can be done at any time, without having to depend on the tides. Small wooden huts provide shelter.
This traditional form of fishing has existed for centuries.
Until about 30 years ago, these fishing huts were very numerous in the département, particularly at the mouths of the Gironde and Charente rivers. Difficult to maintain, they are gradually being abandoned.
