Eglise de Saint-Pierre d'Oléron
Dates & opening times
Descriptif
Reconstruction of Saint-Pierre church began in the 17th century, built on the ruins of the former 12th-century Romanesque church.
One of the most striking features of the building is the façade, built in the style of the Counter-Reformation, an architectural movement relatively little represented in the region.
Punctuated by pilasters, it is adorned with fine scrolls and floral motifs.
The most striking feature is the bell tower, dating from 1776.
A hexagonal tower rising to 40 meters, the steeple was added during the reign of King Louis XVI, in 1776. Designed to serve as a landmark for ships, its summit houses a belvedere offering a breathtaking panorama of the island and its surroundings.
