Descriptif
The state forest of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains is the largest forest on the island of Oléron, covering almost 2,000 hectares. It extends over three communes: Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, Le Grand-Village-Plage and Dolus d'Oléron.
Forested since the 16th century by man to slow the advance of the dunes on the island of Oléron and protect the villages, this area is mainly covered by maritime pines, with a few poplars and oaks. In the past, pines were cultivated for their resin, which was used in the wood industry.
The presence of this vast forest on the island of Oleron is an invitation to escape and discover its wealth of flora and fauna. In the undergrowth, you'll find pink dune carnations, with their subtle scents.
The forest is ideal for walks, with numerous footpaths and a vast network of cycle paths, as well as a very pleasant fitness trail at Vert-Bois.
