Exposition de Gyotaku par DARKOÏ
Dates & opening times
Description
Gyotaku is an ancient Japanese art dating back to the 19th century, which consists of taking the imprint of a fish using ink and paper. This method was used by Japanese fishermen to immortalize their finest catches and pay homage to nature. Once the fish has been carefully prepared, it is entirely painted with Indian ink, cuttlefish ink or specific colored paints. A thin sheet of Japanese paper is then delicately applied to the fish. When the paper is removed, the impression is obtained. This simple but demanding technique requires a long apprenticeship. DARKOÏ (Sylvain Garrigues) Gyotaku are NOT RETOUCHED, as required by the rules of the TRUE METHOD established in Japan, which makes it very difficult to achieve a beautiful result without cheating. Only the eye is repainted to "give life" to the fish, as tradition dictates (any retouching or addition of color will be considered not Gyotaku but mere illustration). All fish, whether freshwater or marine, are then eaten, of course, to keep the virtuous circle going.
