Your accommodation classification

Star rating is a voluntary initiative by accommodation providers, providing a guarantee of quality, service and comfort for French and international customers.
Accommodation is inspected by an accredited inspection body every 5 years. Extensively reformed in 2009, the main aim of the classification is to provide an official guarantee of service quality and comfort in French tourist accommodation. Voluntary, it remains the official benchmark of accommodation quality.

Which tourist accommodations are concerned?

Furnished tourist accommodation, campsites, vacation villages, hotels and tourist residences.

How can furnished accommodation be classified?

The first step
It is compulsory to declare a meublé de tourisme to the town hall, whether it is classified or not. It is made at the town hall in the commune where the furnished accommodation is located, using form cerfa n° 14004*04 (Document to download). Any change in the information provided (on the owner, the furnished accommodation, the rental periods) must be the subject of a new declaration at the town hall.

Why get classified?

  • To demonstrate your commitment to quality to French and international customers.
  • Recognized stars corresponding to international standards.
  • Various advantages linked to classification according to category (e.g. use of vacation vouchers, reduced VAT rate, etc.).
  • Enhanced visibility and promotion on French tourist destination websites.

Steps in the classification procedure

  • File a declaration with the town hall -(Cerfa document n°14004-04). Unless the furnished tourist accommodation is the owner's principal residence, and is occupied for more than 8 months of the year.
  • Make a declaration to the Communauté de Communes to pay the flat-rate tourist tax.
  • Apply for classification, which attests to the quality of your service.
  • The possibility of becoming a partner of the Tourist Office: an annual membership entitles you to a range of services, including advertising for your business, access to digital services and quality support in obtaining tourist labels. You will be asked to provide photos of your business, and the Tourist Office will give you codes for updating your availability.

What about guest rooms?

Bed and breakfast services are not covered by this initiative, but the Office de Tourisme de France has set up a national reference system to help bed and breakfasts guarantee the quality of their services: qualification.
