
The territory
Located on the Atlantic coast of Charente Maritime in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, theIle d'Oléron et du Bassin de Marennes covers 14 communes (356 km²) and has a population of 37,833, 59% of whom live on the Ile d'Oléron.
Ile d'Oléron is characterized by highly developed seaside tourism, based on its climate, beaches and traditional activities (oyster farming, fishing and winegrowing). The Bassin de Marennes is not to be outdone, with its undeniable tourist potential (specific natural areas and architectural sites such as the stronghold of Brouage and Fort Louvois). One of Marennes Oléron's major assets remains its coastal location and island character. The attractiveness of the beaches is undoubtedly the main driver of tourist activity, and contributes to making the Marennes Oléron region one of France's most renowned tourist destinations. Museums, castles and parks complete and diversify the tourist offer.
